
CPB’s Engaging Communities on the Economy (ECOE) grant program assisted 37 stations in convening civic leaders, community partners and citizens in a dialogue around regional and local economic issues. Stations created collaborative projects in response to the financial crisis, addressing topics from homelessness and the working poor to predatory lending, home foreclosure, and health care needs.
Through the ECOE program, stations developed working partnerships with over 214 local organizations nationwide. As with the related Facing the Mortgage Crisis initiative, the stations used the Web and social networking extensively to publicize their efforts. As a result, they produced 72 in-person events that attracted over 2,700 active participants, and 44 additional stand-alone programs for broadcast on-air and online.
