For five years, Detroit Public Television has produced and simulcast the dramatic finals concert for the Sphinx Organization’s annual competition. The Sphinx Organization is a non-profit founded by Aaron P. Dworkin, a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan, and a violinist himself, to overcome the cultural stereotypes of classical music and encourage the participation of African American and Latino musicians. The competition offers school-aged musicians the opportunity to perform with professionals and to receive guidance from a renowned panel of judges. Popular with DPTV audiences, the program not only extends the reach of the Sphinx Organization, but has strengthened DPTV’s arts partnerships throughout southeast Michigan.
