KSDS developed a multipronged commitment to music education in response to shrinking state education funds for visual and performing arts. With the knowledge that musical accomplishment is linked to academic success, each year the station solicits used instruments from their listeners, to be refurbished and donated to local schools. Over the last three years, more than 250 instruments were donated. KSDS also produces and hosts the City College Education Jazz Festival, with 20 middle school and high school jazz bands performing. Finally, the station distributes a multimedia Jazz for Young People curriculum to local schools, and sends a facilitator into classrooms to demonstrate its effective use to teachers.
