Nearly half the population of Southwest Florida is replaced by new residents every eight years. This significant shift challenges local community service organizations that rely on volunteers and individual contributions to operate and support their programs. To address the problem, WGCU developed a multimedia project known as Connect! to provide residents with information and the opportunity to link up with non-profits in the area. The project includes a radio call-in show, weekly TV program, articles in WGCU’s monthly magazine and interactive Web features. The number of volunteers for local soup kitchens, youth mentoring programs, animal/pet advocacy organizations, and environmental conservation has grown, and the project has deepened WGCU’s relationships with community leaders.
