National Cancer Institute statistics reveal that death rates from cancer in Ohio continue to climb. In response, WBGU-TV and its partners launched an extensive cancer awareness campaign to reinforce that cancer is about hope and survivorship, stress the need for research through clinical trials, build awareness of locally-available standard of care services, and provide cancer survivors isolated in small towns and rural areas with information and support. The team created a Living Legacy of Hope website, sponsored a health event to share information and collect survivor stories and produced on-air documentaries Living with Cancer and The Changing Face of Cancer Research and Clinical Trials. The project helped WBGU forge new community alliances, and sparked funding commitments from local foundations.
In response to alarming foreclosure rates in Ohio, and with $8,000 in donations from area agencies and non-profits, WBGU-TV produced NW Ohio Journal Special Report: Mortgage Foreclosure Intervention. The two-hour live program featured representatives from the Ohio Treasurer's Office, the United Way, Citizens Bank and the Superior Federial Credit Union. A local bankruptcy lawyer and a collection officer were also available to answer calls throughout the broadcast. More than 500 DVD copies of the program were requested by human service agencies, viewers and local public officials. The relationships forged during the project helped WBGU and its partners receive a $200,000 foreclosure mitigation grant from Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati.
