South Carolina has a large military population and long legacy of service. To pay tribute, and to preserve part of the state’s history, SCETV worked with the South Carolina National Guard, American Legion Post #6 and students from Richland Northeast High School's to gather firsthand recollections from veterans, civilians and soldiers who have served the United States from World War II until today. Students learned both oral history and digital media techniques, and the 19 mini-documentaries they produced covering the gamut of military experience are available online for teachers and scholars to access.
Historically, South Carolina’s voter turn out has been one of the lowest in the nation. SCETV wanted to counteract the dismal voting record in the state by engaging future and first time voters through their Ready To Vote project. Teens from around the state were invited to question gubernatorial candidates during a television debate fed live to all public schools, and then edited for broadcast. The station created a robust website where students could upload their own videos and articles about issues and candidates, and held voter registration drives in high schools and colleges around South Carolina. Ready To Vote has won numerous awards, including the SC Broadcasters Association Star Award, Best Public Service Project Award from the International Association of Business Communicators and the Gracie Award for Outstanding Public Affairs Program from American Women in Radio and Television.
