Each year since 2001, ideastream (comprising WVIZ-TV and WCPN-FM) has used its Listening Project to ask the citizens of Cleveland to identify the assets and challenges of the region – to essentially formulate a civic agenda around which the station could develop multiplatform content and services. More than 11,000 people have participated in the discussion, including community leaders, educators and the general public. The Listening Project has led to local documentaries covering the city’s foreclosure crisis and the creation of 21st century schools in the region, as well as a performance of the Cleveland Orchestra broadcast on PBS stations around the country. The Listening Project also includes reviews of how well and frequently ideastream reports on issues identified in the previous year. The stations receive high grades for their thoughtful, relevant programming and outreach, and their role in helping the community determine its own future.
Ideastream's WCPN collaborated with its sister station WVIZ to promote the Washington Week Road Show. The stations utilized My Source print ads and radio spots to encourage everyone to tune in to a Washington Week special broadcast from Cleveland State University.
