34 Medals of Honor were awarded to natives of the Lone Star state during WWII, and many Texans went on to fame, including Dwight Eisenhower, Chester Nimitz and Audie Murphy. As part of the national engagement effort for Ken Burns' The War, KACV conducted a two-year campaign to capture the stories of Texas veterans. They trained staff and students at 30 libraries, museums, senior facilities and schools to conduct and record oral history interviews. More than 300 veterans contributed and more than 1,000 clips were made available on the station web site. The station worked with ten local teachers to develop lesson plans about WWII, and produced a traveling exhibit featuring photographs taken of and by the veterans, which was used more than 50 times. On-air, the station produced World War II: The Panhandle Project and A Cathedral in the Desert: the POWs of Hereford Camp 31.
